In
society today we hear a lot about "thinking
outside the box". We would like you to
think about the box, literally!
Boxes are something we use everyday and probably
don't think too much about. Are you aware
that there are two primary types of boxes?
The two primary types of boxes are corrugated
cardboard and paperboard, sometimes called
boxboard. For the purposes of recycling the
differences are very important.
What's the difference? Corrugated
cardboard is made up of several layers with
a ribbed center and paper on both sides. It
is used for packaging items like furniture,
appliances and they are excellent moving boxes
because of their heavy duty design. Alternatively,
paperboard is a single layer pressed boxboard
and is typically used for retail packaging.
Some examples of paperboard packaging include:
pop, cereal, tissue and cake mix boxes.
How does the difference between
corrugated cardboard and paperboard affect
you? Otter Tail County only accepts corrugated
cardboard for recycling. Paperboard is not
currently accepted for recycling. To dispose
of paperboard, please place in your trash.
Where can you recycle your
corrugated cardboard? Presently, there are
two ways to recycle corrugated cardboard in
the City of Fergus Falls. One option is the
City of Fergus Falls' curbside recycling program.
Flatten and bundle your corrugated cardboard
and place with your other recyclables for
pick-up. Another option is to recycle your
corrugated cardboard at the Otter Tail County
Recycling Center and Wal~Mart corrugated cardboard
containers. The corrugated cardboard containers
feature openings approximately 6 inches high
by 48 inches long. The opening size is designed
so everyone must break their boxes down to
save space and to allow greater volume to
be placed in before we need to service the
container. It will also be more difficult
for those who may misuse these recycling containers
to put unwanted/inappropriate items.
